The book was launched by two eminent historians—Mr Sohail Hashmi, an author, academic and activist, along with Dr Narayani Gupta, an academic, author and heritage activist. The launch was followed by a discussion around Water Heritage, its decline and possibilities of restoration.

Niyogi Books have brought forth a handy and informative book on step wells of Delhi. Delhi Heritage Top 10 Baolis is the first volume of the series and a must pick for travel enthusiasts and those with an interest in architecture and historical structures. Details of locations, distance, and commute have been provided for each of the baolis. The book is both reader-friendly and useful for visitors looking to explore these hidden architectural gems in the city.

The author, Vikramjit was keen to discuss his journey and the challenges he faced while researching this book. He shared some anecdotes and stories about his experience. He mentioned about how baolis can be used to restore ground water and stated that ‘Baolis and wells connect the underground network of water channels. If we can find a way to recharge them, we can easily raise the groundwater level of the entire city.’ A special informative exhibition on baolis, curated by the author, was on display during the event, which was fascinating viewing for the audience.

Delhi Heritage Top 10 series is a comprehensive guide to Delhi’s heritage icons and architectural gems. The first volume in the series delves into the fascinating history and the great significance of forgotten, subterranean, manmade water structures, commonly known as baolis or stepwells. The book walks us through the top 10 baolis, with two special mentions. Besides giving a vivid description of the functioning and revival of the baolis, the book also focuses on the social importance of each structure. The work is an outcome of a five-year-long research from various archives, and contains historic as well as modern photographs along with architectural drawings.
