Retrospection: A Poem by Kabir Deb

Lonely night;
With a smirking moon;
He slept with his pet aside;
Night grabbed him harder;
As nerves started to squeeze him;

A sudden thud took place;
When he was reading a travelogue with eyes closed;
His sleep became a riot;
When they started yelling the names of God;
A tyranny released her wings to fly;

The backache was resisting his horror to wake;
He wanted a second more;
To return to the sublime nation;
Where rain meant condensed water;
Not the nation where rain means God’s creation;

Before the quest he never read his death;
He just knew life ends;
But that xenophobic thud;
Brought the death out of his fear;
A loophole condemned his retrospection;

The moment that he built with his voice;
Now hugs the venomous air;
The creator now meets two persons;
One who questions what ‘He’ created;
And one who believes that ‘He’ created;

Imitating death he opened the door;
Behind which some dead caterpillars stood;
Their metamorphosis had stopped;
When they started to mask everything;
They masked their  friends;
And they masked their foes;

When his horror met death;
Horror kneeled before his life;
As he unveiled himself before them;
Words seldom exchanged;
It was a brutal touch which bombarded;
Unknowingly they killed everything;

They thought of meeting their belief;
By setting fire on his art;
The art which his voice created;
They never thought that even smoke has a silhouette;
His touch would form its shape even in the dusky smoke;
Brutality now gave birth to wonder.

My name is Kabir Deb. I was born in Haflong and completed my schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Karimganj. After that completed my Graduation and Masters from Assam University, Assam. Poetry has been my passion and a hobby from my childhood. I look forward to change the society with the power of poetry. When the society is facing with many political and social conflicts I would like to show them that poetry can destroy even the most destructive force in the society as poetry knows how to create. My work has been published in ‘To be my Valentine’ edition of Hall of Poets.
